My Verdict: Motion Boom Vs. Motion+

I think Soundcore Motion Plus is a better choice of speaker for its amazing audio quality and impressive and brighter sound signature, decent bass delivery that doesn’t muddy the mids, remaining clear at volumes between 50-100%. In addition, it comes with a USB-C port for charging, has an AUX cable input for wired connectivity, and less weight with compact size for better portability. It is completely watertight with an IPX7 rating, making it suitable for outdoor use, it can be connected to two devices at a time and allows stereo pairing, which makes it a complete package.

Detailed Comparison: Motion Boom Vs. Motion Plus

Design, Build Quality, and Sturdiness:

First, let’s look at the design, build quality, and sturdiness of these two speakers. Both the speakers have a cylindrical design with a rugged build quality; however, the Motion Boom has a more plasticky design, with a metal grill or mesh covering all over, which protects the sound drivers from accidental falls. A rubberized covering protects the speaker’s ports, and a thick rubber flap at the backside. 

Motion Plus weighs lighter than Motion Boom; however, Motion Boom has a built-in handle, making it easier to carry the speaker. Furthermore, Motion Plus has a metal grille for protecting the sound drivers, a Silicone body, and texturized buttons on the top for easier touch.

I conducted a fair test to check the sturdiness of both the speakers, where I tried throwing them from a height of 4 feet on the carpeted and concrete ground. Both speakers sustained visible damage on the carpet, whereas the Motion Boom seemed pretty damaged on the concrete. Although the rubberized flap at the back and ports saved it a lot, visible damages were seen on the handle and overall speaker body.

On the other hand, Motion Plus sustained the fall with minimal damage and scratches on the speaker’s body. The sound drivers remained safe during the drop tests.

Bluetooth and Connectivity Option:

Both Motion Boom and Motion Plus are Bluetooth speakers featuring Bluetooth Version 5.0, which means they can be connected to the source wirelessly. However, Motion+ comes with the additional option of AUX and a 3.5mm jack, which allows it to connect to the audio source via wires. It can also be connected to another Motion + speaker to form a stereo pair.

In addition, this speaker also has the option of multiple device pairing, allowing it to connect to two devices at a time. It’s an amazing feature to allow people at a party to play music by taking turns.

On the other hand, the Motion Boom has an extra USB-A port, allowing the user to charge their devices from the speaker, but it doesn’t have AUX and a 3.5mm jack for connecting the speaker to the source through a wired connection. This speaker doesn’t support multiple device pairing or stereo pairing.

Battery Life:

Let’s discuss the battery life of both speakers. The advertised battery life of Soundcore Motion + is 12 hours, and Motion Boom is 24 hours. However, the battery life varies depending on the type of music, volume, and usage.

I tested the battery life of each speaker by playing similar music on both at a volume above 40%; the Soundcore Motion Boom BassUp feature turned on and Motion Plus in its regular settings. The battery life lasted more than 12 hours for Motion Plus, whereas for Motion Boom, the battery life ended in 22 hours.

For a volume of 60-70%, the battery life of the Motion Boom ended up to 20 hours, whereas the Motion Plus sustained 10 hours to the maximum.

So, all in all, the Motion Boom has a better battery life than the Motion Plus. However, the battery percentage may drop faster depending on the type of music you’re playing and the volume; the Motion Boom has a longer battery life.

Audio Quality:

Motion Boom has a frequency response of 60Hz-20KHz, whereas Motion Plus has a frequency response of 50Hz-40KHz.

I conducted a fair sound test on both speakers by playing music at 40% volume and Motion Boom and Motion + set to default settings. At this volume, Motion Boom performed better by delivering clear and punchy bass and decent mids and treble; however, Motion + gets a little muddy because of overly heavy bass delivery, affecting the mids and trebles.

At volumes between 60-80% and above, the Motion Plus was responsive with better bass and a bright audio signature with clear mids and trebles delivery. It provides an amazing clarity on vocals and instruments. On the other hand, the Motion Boom has great bass delivery, yet it lacks clarity in the delivery of mids, vocals, and instruments.

So, the bass delivery is more accurate in Motion Boom, and it’s suitable for outdoor settings. However, it lacks clarity in mids and highs. On the contrary, the Motion Plus has a brighter audio signature with decent bass and clear mids, highs, and vocals and is more suitable for indoor settings.

The sound signature may also be considered based on personal preference; if you’re looking for a heavy bass with clear mids and high, you can go for Motion+; on the other hand, for a more balanced audio signature, you can choose Motion Boom.

Active Features:

Both the speakers have IPX7 certification, which means they are water-tight and submersible in water for about 30 minutes. They have a built-in microphone for hands-free calling and using Voice Assistants while connected to the smartphone. 

The speakers do not support Wi-Fi connectivity, but they have a companion app with basic controls for the speakers and firmware updates. It also has a custom Equalizer and Preset audio modes, allowing users to adjust the audio settings as required.

Now, both speakers have an IPX7 rating for water resistance and a sturdy design; however, in my opinion, Motion Boom cuts the edge here because of the wider soundstage suitable for outdoor settings. Furthermore, this also has a longer battery life than Motion Plus and comes with a USB-A port, which allows the user to charge their own devices.

Beaches and Pool Parties

For beaches and pool parties, you can choose any of these; however, you must be careful as these speakers are not dust resistant, and a lot of dust and sand particles can get inside, hence damaging the sound drivers. For a beach, it would be better to go for Motion Boom as it’s better suited for outdoor settings.

Indoor Settings and Larger Gatherings

In my experience, Motion Plus is more suitable for indoor settings and larger gatherings because of its brighter sound signature, stereo pairing, and clear bass, mids, and trebles delivery. 

Final Word

The choice of speakers depends on personal preference, which means that one person’s opinion may vary from the other one. Overall, Anker Soundcore Motion+ seems a better choice for a decent audio signature, clear mids, trebles, and vocals delivery, great battery life, and various connectivity options. It also has a stereo pairing option and an equalizer to customize the settings.

However, if you’re looking for a more balanced sound signature and longer battery life, you may choose the Motion Boom.
